The Flu

Is the swine flu really that bad? Yes, it can be at times but so can the seasonal flu that comes around each and every year. I have read articles that stated that more people die from the regular flu each year more than the people that have died do to the H1N1 flu. “In the U.S., between 5% and 20% of the population becomes ill and 36,000 people die” this statement came from Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius who also said it is dangerous yes but it will not be like the regular flu. There was the same virus called the H1N1 but of course has mutated since then that happened back in 1918 but scientists have claimed that this virus is nowhere even near this virus. Scientist have also said that you should wash your hands frequently, avoid going to work if sick does this sound similar to any other time your sick. I think that this flu is just a bad case of the regular flu. I think that the government just made a big deal about it because so many people were getting it but if you really think about so many people get the regular flu as well they just don’t mention that because so many people have it. I hope you are getting what I am trying to say. I just want people to know that it really is not that big of a scare well at least to me it isn’t. All you have to do is take the percations you would with any other flu season. Tell me what you think about this is it really that big of a deal???

  1. well i think all flu's are big deals this one is no exception. I did areport in 8th grade about the flu outbreak of 1918, and 1919, and the death total was somewhere around 30 million(i got lots of different totals anywhere from 15 million to 50 million). By no means do i believe this flu to be anywhere close to that bad, but with horrible flu outbreaks of the past and the antsy american public that likes to feel like our govenment is doing everything they can to contain any threat i think the government's over reaction is justified.

  2. I am a totally freaked out when people get sick! Haha. I agree with you because honestly, the symptoms are pretty much the same as the regular flu. I think the media is just running away with this and it is really unnecessary. The H1N1 flu sounds like a bad combo of the stomach flu and the regular flu and to me, if you take precautions like get enough sleep and wash your hands, that's all you can do. I just wish the media would leave it alone.

  3. I agree one hundred percent, but you're wrong about one thing. It isn't the government who hyped it up, it was the media. Think about it, you think the government's making a big deal about it, but who's telling you all you know... the media?

But yes, the statistics show that the swine flu, now called the H1N1 virus, does in face do less damage than the regular flu. It's partially aggravating listening to people freak out, but it can also be humorous watching. Since the swine came about, people have been taking precautions, but they've been overdoing it drastically. I know a person who took their kid out of school because of the flu. But I'm not really pissed or aggravated by the flu. The media enhancing the worry and scaring the public is what needs to change.

  4. Well the flu is not the main culprit that kills the people who get it. That person has either a bad immune system to begin with or just in-sufficient in the vitamins needed to support good health. Such as vitamin D, it wasn’t till the other day I was reading my parenting magazine and it mentioned that we should have a good source of vitamin D to aid in staying healthy. I always thought vitamin C was the main one and never really thought about vitamin D as being “important” in aiding good health. My father died from the flu (amongst other things as well) but he was an alcoholic and heavy smoker so his immune system could not fight off all the illness. Ultimately as you mentioned wash hands stay home if sick and make sure you are getting a sufficient amount of all vitamins to stay healthy.

  5. Kyle, this is an excellent topic.

I have a tendency to not take these things as seriously as I should. So I won't comment. But, I am more concerned about our perception of the flu perpetuated by the media. Again, another aspect of our lives to fear.
